Guidance

Hello everyone, I am Mrs. Grompone and I am the guidance counselor for both Gibbs and Berkley schools. I am very excited about the program I have put together and look forward to working with all of the students. Here is a little general information about the program.
The elementary school counseling and guidance program is a part of the total school program and compliments learning in the classroom. It is child-centered, preventive, and developmental. The program encourages students' social, emotional, and personal growth at each stage of their development. The purpose of counseling with students, parents, and teachers is to help students maximize their potential. The elementary school counselor also conducts guidance lessons; consults with parents, teachers, and other professionals; and coordinates student services in the school. This counseling and guidance program provides elementary students with assistance in: understanding self and developing a positive self-image, showing respect for the feelings of others, understanding the decision-making process, maintaining effective relationships with peers and adults, developing effective study skills, being prepared to make the transition to the middle school.
Throughout the school year I will be running groups based around various topics (new students, self esteem, making friends, new siblings, change in family, etc.). If you would like your child to be a part of one of these groups or if there is any way I can assist your child, please contact me and I can let you know what is available. You may also click on the links below for parent permission slips. Please fill out the form completely and send it into school with your child.
In addition to my other duties, I am also the direct contact for the Intervention and Referral Services Committee (I&RS). The Intervention and Referral Services Committee consists of the principal, guidance counselor, a Child Study Team member, a classroom teacher, and the referring teacher. The I&RS committee has been established as a school-based problem solving group that converses monthly for the purpose of assisting teachers with strategies for working with students who are experiencing difficulties. The purpose of I&RS is to develop an assistance plan especially designed to assist your child within the regular education setting.

Guidance News: Fall 2008
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of the new students to Gibbs School. During September and October I will be taking the time to meet with all of you during our New Student Lunch Bunch. I look forward to spending time with you.
I want to also say that I am so very proud of all of our kindergarten students; they have done a wonderful job starting school. Kindergarteners are often apprehensive at first, but when I walk down the hallways they are all eagerly learning and enjoying their experiences in their classrooms.
October brings Violence Awareness Week and Red Ribbon Week to Gibbs school. For violence awareness week I will be going into all of the first – fifth grade classes to talk about bullying. During Red Ribbon week I have many fun activities planned for the entire school as well as a poster contest for the fourth and fifth grade students! The fifth grade students will also participate in the “Plant the Promise” initiative to show their promise to remain drug free. I will send home information in early October (the information will also be posted on my web site).
This year I have also acquired a bulletin board! It is located across from my office. I will update it frequently with schedules, information about school-wide events, permission slips and information about Lunch Bunch!
