Music

Ms. Lewis

All students in grades 1-5 have general music once a week. During music class students read music, sing, play instruments, learn about world music, and even write their own musical pieces.

In first grade, students learn how to use their singing voice to make different high and low pitches. They also learn about beats, rhythm and playing percussion instruments.

In second grade, students learn more about rhythms and how to accompany their songs on percussion instruments. They also do lots of dancing and movement games to accompany their songs.

The third graders main concentration is learning to play the recorder. Students learn how to read music, take care of an instrument and play in an ensemble.

In fourth grade, students take a trip around the world. They study music from Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and North and South America and discover that each continent's music has its own unique sound. They also learn about other cultures and discover new instruments.

Fifth graders are developing their voices and music reading skills by learning to sing choral music. They study different American composers and their music while learning to perform in a choral ensemble.
