Fifth Grade Miss Cortese, Miss Dorn, Mrs. Mayer, Mr. Saffer
November has been an exciting month in the 5th grade wing at Gibbs. Mrs. Mayer’s class has been exploring the Native Americans of North America with fun and tasty projects! Totem poles, jewelry, teepees, and winter counts were made to honor the Tlingit, Hopi, Lakota Sioux, and Eastern Woodland natives. Fish, jerky, cornbread, and fruits were also sampled. American memorials are being researched in the technology lab to honor Americans who fought for our country. Finally, 5-M celebrated the groovy 1960’s with research projects highlighting the decade. Pin the tail on the donkey, tic-tack-toe, as well as music from the decade of peace and love was enjoyed. Yes, Elvis was spotted in room 133! Happy Holidays to all! Ms. Cortese's class researched and wrote reports about the different planets in the Milky Way Galaxy. In Social Studies, students created projects based on the Native Americans of the Southwest, the Plains and the Eastern Woodlands. In Math, students began graphing in the lab, incorporating the use of technology with graphing skills. Miss Dorn's class decided to participate in a Scholastic Read-A-Thon, where we had the opportunity to donate 100 books to under privileged children. Over the course of a month, we read 100 books and Scholastic donated various grade level appropriate books to The Whaley's Children Center. For Veteran's Day, Miss Dorn's class learned about the importance of celebrating our war veterans. We sent virtual postcards over seas to the brave men and women fighting for and protecting our country. Miss Dorn's class has been studying Native Americans. We have created Hopi kachina dolls, Anasazi pottery, Lakota tipis, and Tlingit totem polls. Miss Dorn's class has been blasting off through outer space and studying the Solar System. We worked with partners to create travel brochures for the various planets. We are currently recreating models of the Solar System. Check back in December to see how wonderful they turn out! The 5th graders at B.F. Gibbs School studied a thematic unit on the Election through October and November. In the beginning of November Miss Dorn's class had an opportunity to participate in and watch a live web cast on Scholastic.com, produced by kid reporters on the 2008 election. Mr. Davies came to speak to our class as a "surprise visitor" and taught us how the electoral process worked. Miss Dorn's class took an in depth look at the way the voting process works. Students wrote campaign speeches, created campaign buttons and posters, and even got a chance to vote for class members in their own voting booth! Miss Dorn's class has their very own president, vice president, secretary, and class representatives! Students also got a chance to research their favorite president and create factual campaign posters for them! Come take a tour of our 5th grade hallway to see all of the student’s hard work on display! Mr. Saffer's class climbed through the wardrobe into the magical land of Narnia. Students read the classic novel, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," by C.S. Lewis and studied the time period in world history that the novel took place. In keeping with the theme of the novel, we explored elapsed time as well as temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. In December, we look forward to exploring the Polar Regions of the world, and of course… "The Polar Express," by Chris van Allsburg. The fifth grade started the D.A.R.E program this month. Our D.A.R.E officer will be teaching the students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. He will discuss the importance of positive decision making and how students can be positive role models. The 5th grade team would like to thank the class parents for providing the students with wonderful Thanksgiving celebrations. Thank you for your continued support in all that we do.
