Speech Therapy

Mrs. Jill Benyamine and Mrs. Robin Shugg

Students enrolled in speech therapy at B.F. Gibbs Elementary School participate in a variety of fun and exciting activities which address IEP goals and objectives.  A multi-sensory approach is used in speech therapy sessions to help our students meet their goals.  Communication with parents and teachers is essential and contributes greatly to our students’ success.

Activities and materials include speech and language related games, computer programs, manipulatives and music.  Areas addressed in speech therapy include:

Articulation – the way words are pronounced.  Sound errors consist of substitutions of one sound for another, omission of sounds, and/or sound distortions.

Language – the content and structure of our communication.  Areas most often covered in speech class include vocabulary (knowledge and use of words), sentence form and grammar, and language processing (the ability to understand incoming messages and express messages correctly).

Fluency – the flow of speech.  Fluent speech is usually smooth and rhythmicA dysfluency is a break in fluent speech.  Everyone has occasional dysfluencies when speaking.  Stuttering is speech that has more dysfluencies than is considered average.

Parents can reinforce speech and language skills in various situations – car rides, grocery shopping, preparing meals, at the park, etc.

Listening is very important for learning.  Parents can show their child how to receive and understand information they hear.

Talking at home, at mealtime for example, is an opportunity to learn and use language and speech sounds.  Your child can practice listening to others, describe events at school, and share feelings and information.

Reading is one of the most important areas of language development.  Read to your child.  Try to set aside time and let your child see you reading books, magazines and newspapers.

Most importantly, have fun with speech and language!  Play word games, tell and retell stories, learn new songs, discuss photographs… the opportunities are endless!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s communication skills.
